How to Celebrate St. Patricks Day with your Children

St. Patrick's Day has its roots in Ireland as a celebration of Christianity on March 17th. As Irish people emigrated to the US and Canada, the festivities transformed to include parades, corned beef and cabbage, and wearing green. Today, people from all over the world celebrate St. Patrick's Day. You don't have to be Irish to enjoy this holiday!

  1. Wear green - Saint Patrick's Day is known for the color green, so make sure you and your preschooler are decked out in green from head to toe. You could even create a green-themed outfit together using construction paper, ribbons, or fabric.

  2. Make shamrock crafts - There are plenty of easy shamrock crafts you can make with your preschooler. Cut out shamrocks from green paper, decorate them with glitter, markers, or stickers, and use them to create a garland, a mobile, or a wall decoration.

  3. Bake St. Patrick's Day treats - Get your little one involved in the kitchen by baking some festive treats. You could make green cookies, cupcakes, or even a special St. Patrick's Day cake. Your preschooler can help mix the ingredients, decorate the treats, and of course, taste-test along the way.

  4. Read St. Patrick's Day stories - There are plenty of children's books that celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Read a few of these stories with your preschooler and discuss the holiday's history, traditions, and symbols. You could also act out the stories with your child or make up your own St. Patrick's Day tale.

  5. Go on a treasure hunt - Create a treasure hunt for your preschooler with clues that lead them to a pot of gold (or some other treat or surprise). Use shamrock-shaped clues, green ribbons, or other festive decorations to make it more exciting.

  6. Have a St. Patrick's Day parade - Get your little one and some friends together and have a parade around your neighborhood or yard. You could make hats or banners with St. Patrick's Day sayings, and of course, wave some green flags.

  7. Make a leprechaun trap - According to Irish folklore, leprechauns are mischievous little creatures who like to hide their pots of gold. Your preschooler can create a leprechaun trap out of a cardboard box, some green paper, and some shiny gold coins. Who knows, you might even catch a leprechaun!

Overall, St. Patrick's Day is a great opportunity to have some fun and get creative with your preschooler. Try out some of these activities, or come up with your own ideas, and make some St. Patrick's Day memories that your little one will cherish for years to come.
